Former Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez claims that Blues supporters resented his success with Liverpool and never took to him during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Benitez, now with Napoli, says that his clashes with Jose Mourinho and Chelsea during his tenure as Reds manager meant that he was never welcomed at Stamford Bridge.
“They remembered the successes we had with Liverpool against them, against that powerful Chelsea, and maybe that was stuck in their head,” Benitez said. “That was past. We could not change.”
Despite the hostility from the terraces, Benitez says he still enjoyed his time at the club and claims he had a good relationship with the players and staff.
“With the players and staff I worked with there was a very good relationship but there was a group of fans that could not change the opinion,” Benitez added.
The Spaniard is now in Italy guiding Napoli in the latest Serie A campaign which sees them occupy third place, four points behind league leaders Roma.
Under Benitez’s stewardship, Napoli have the best pass accuracy rating in Serie A ahead of the likes of Juventus and high flyers Roma.
