FC Barcelona is keen to reinforce their defence as they look to secure an alternative of Jordi Alba

What's the rumour?

According to a report from Spanish media outlet Sport, FC Barcelona is keen to reinforce their defence as they look to secure an alternative of Jordi Alba.

In case you didn't know...

FC Barcelona are short-handed in one position in their squad as Jordi Alba remains the only option for their left back position. As a result of lack of any alternatives, huge responsibility falls both on Alba and Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde.

Alba has featured in 23 out of 26 LaLiga games so far and has provided 10 assists in all competitions- seven in the LaLiga and three in the Champions League- scoring once in both these competitions.

Moreover, the left back's chemistry with Lionel Messi has a huge impact on the pitch for Barcelona.

There is no doubt over the fact that Jordi Alba remains an integral part of Valverde's plans and the Spanish left-back signed a new contract to extend his stay at the club until 2024.

The heart of the matter

Due to the importance of Alba in the team, Barcelona is not yet looking for a direct replacement but are keen to strengthen their rearguard with some key reinforcements, thereby providing an alternative left back for the coach.

According to the report, the idea is to sign a left back with low cost as they look at left backs with little time on their contract with respective clubs.

Arsenal's Nacho Monreal, Alberto Moreno of Liverpool and rival Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis are the names in a three-man shortlist.

Barcelona board will obviously offer only two-year contracts for these veteran defenders as they will continue their search for a young replacement.

Rumour rating: 5/10

It is crystal clear that Barcelona rearguard needs reinforcements as an injury for Jordi Alba will leave them without any alternatives.

The club might be willing to go for cheaper and short term alternatives who can play the second fiddle to Alba.

What's next?

Barcelona will face Girona in the Catalan Cup and face Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga before turning their sights towards Lyon in the Champions League.
