Sergio Ramos to undergo shoulder surgery after El Clasico

Ramos injured himself as he scored the opener with a spectacular bicycle kick against Sevilla last week.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has decided to play through his shoulder injury when his side face arch rivals FC Barcelona later this month, as per reports on AS. Ramos and his teammates will be looking to go level on points with the reigning Spanish champions in the La Liga table when both teams meet at the Santiago Bernabeu on the 21st of November.

The 29-year-old has made six league appearances under manager Rafa Benitez and has nursed a shoulder injury since the early stages of the campaign in their 4-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League in September.

Despite the injury, Ramos was forced to play against Atletico Madrid, Celta Vigo and Sevilla along with the Champions League tie against Paris-Saint Germain. His compatriot Nacho has been deployed in the centre-back role by the manager during his absence and the Spanish centre-back has now confirmed that he will undergo treatment for the problem which was aggravated after he landed on his shoulder having scored a spectacular bicycle kick against Sevilla on Sunday.

“The shoulder is not great,” Ramos told reporters after the game.

“I fell badly on it and hurt it again, it’s something of a setback.”

"I fell supporting myself while scoring the goal. The important thing is to recover.”

“I have played four or five games recently with an injection.”

"When you have a recurrence of the injury it is hard to take. I try to help the team, and now I see the risk, and the value in recovering completely."

Ramos left out of Spain squad for upcomin friendlies

Ramos’ gaffer had already explained that the club captain was able to play with the injection but as soon as the effect wore off, the pain would return. The player was starting to see alleviation in his discomfort, but Sunday’s fall has accentuated the pain again.

With this latest news, the Spanish international has been left out of Vicente del Bosque’s squad for the upcoming matches against England and Belgium. Ramos is thought to prefer a conservative treatment plan to rehabilitate his shoulder but has not ruled out surgery.

Meanwhile, their rivals Barca have been handed with a boost as Lionel Messi is closing in on a full-recovery and he might be in contention to feature at the Bernabeu later this month. However, midfielder Ivan Rakitic will be out for the clash with an injury which he suffered earlier this month in their 3-0 win over BATE Borisov.
