In June 12, 2013 Marcos Falopa succeeded Trevor James Morgan as East Bengal Manager ahead of Dutch coach John Van Loen and the Argentine Rodolfo Zapata. In his short tenure as the coach of East Bengal, Marcos Falopa took East Bengal to the AFC cup semifinal and won two matches in I-league, while also suffering two losses and managing one draw. After the Kolkata league match against Peerless he announced his resignation as the head coach of East Bengal on 14th November 2013 and Armando Colaco took charge of East Bengal after Falopa’s departure.

Why Marcos Falopa failed

? Every good coach must be a friend, philosopher and guide to the footballers; while Trevor Morgan had kept good relationships with all the footballers, Falopa never did that. He always taught them like a boss.

? In the practice season he didn’t exert control over the footballers and failed to understand their mentality. Being a Brazilian he always talked about Kaka, Cafu, Pele and thought of all the footballers under him as skilful and versatile; he failed to read the standard of Indian football. In practice matches he put the goal-keeper in mid-field and strikers in defense.

? Trevor Morgan was in charge of East Bengal for three years and under him East Bengal played the passing game with the formation 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-2-1. But Falopa brought the 4-4-2 formation with the aerial ball game and he put wrong players in wrong positions because of which the players were not able to give their best.

? He didn’t have good relationships with some senior players. Even when Suyoka and Khabra were injured the coach didn’t help them to get match fitness; sometimes, it seemed like he was not concerned about their situation.

? Supporters and the media are the two main things in Kolkata football; if you treat them well you will be rewarded. Trevor Morgan did his best in this matter but Falopa failed by a big margin.

Why Armando Colaco may get success

? Armando Colaco is an Indian, and he understands the mentality of Indian footballers better. He has managed Indian club teams and national teams and seen the players from the grass root level. He can handle the high profile players, and understands the value of managing a big club like East Bengal.

? Winning matches doesn’t matter in Kolkata; at the end of the day trophy talks. Armando Colaco won the I-league five times with Dempo and also the Federation Cup and the prestigious Durand Cup, and he took Dempo to the AFC Cup semi-final in 2008. He certainly has the credentials to be the long-term replacement of Marcos Falopa; he was in charge of Dempo for a long period of 13 years.

? East Bengal footballers like to play the passing game and having played together for the past 3-4 years, they have an understanding among them. Colaco is likely to play the passing game like Trevor Morgan which will help the East Bengal players. He has an assortment of seniors and juniors footballers in the team.

? The man management skills of Armando Colaco are first-rate, as proven by his previous coaching record.

? Armando Colaco has a good relationship with the media and he will likely keep it that way; all he has to do now is to win the heart of the East Bengal supporter.
