Darkness suspended play during the first round of the 113th US Open on Thursday with 78 golfers still on the course after two thunderstorm delays that halted play for more than four hours.

Players will finish their first round starting at 7:15 a.m. (1115 GMT) Friday and move into the second round at Merion Golf Club.

The first storm suspension came in the morning, only 111 minutes after the first tee shot to begin the tournament, and it lasted for three hours and 32 minutes.

Play resumed in the afternoon and continued until 6:11 in the evening, when a second storm stopped play for about 45 minutes.
