Scottie Scheffler’s attorney dismisses reports of charges against the golfer being dropped

Scottie Scheffler's attorney has dismissed reports that the charges against the golfer were dropped. Furthermore, his arraignment in Louisville, Kentucky, has been pushed to June 3.

On Friday, May 17, Scottie Scheffler was arrested after he tried to bypass traffic near the Valhalla Golf Club. The police were present at the scene due to a fatal accident that had taken place earlier. The golfer was detained on four charges, including second-degree assault on an officer.

Scheffler's hearing was initially scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, but his attorney, Steve Romines, said that the date was delayed due to a scheduling conflict. The proceeding will now take place on June 3 at 9 am ET. He also revealed that the charges haven't been dismissed. He was quoted as saying, via Golf Channel:

"I've been defending criminal cases for 30 years and have learned to never be surprised. Whoever reported (the charges) were going to be dismissed was not accurate.”

Besides the assault, the world No. 1 golfer was also charged with reckless driving, ignoring signals from an officer directing traffic and criminal mischief (3rd degree).

The Louisville Metro Police Department claimed that Scheffler was instructed by Detective Bryan Gillis to stop, given that the spot was under investigation. However, the golfer ignored him, drove off and dragged Gillis in the process, resulting in injuries to Gillis' left wrist and knee.

"I was shaking for like an hour": Scottie Scheffler details arrest experience

On Friday, during the post-round interview of the PGA Championship, Scottie Scheffler described his arrest experience. He said that he was quite rattled when that happened, but the police officer who took him to jail was quite kind and helped him to calm down.

"I was never angry. I was just in shock, and I think my body was just -- I was shaking the whole time. I was shaking for like an hour. It was definitely a new feeling for me.

"He came out and we had a nice chat, and then the officers inside the jail were tremendous. A couple of them made some jokes when they figured out who I was, what happened, and how I ended up there."

Scottie Scheffler will now head to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Charles Schwab Challenge, which will take place from Thursday, May 23 to Sunday, May 26 at the Colonial Golf Course.

The 27-year-old golfer has won four titles this season, including the Masters Tournament. He finished T8 at the PGA Championship last week.
