FIA President Jean Todt is looking to reduce the costs of the yet to be introduced Formula 1 V6 turbo engines. The plan is to switch to these smaller engines before 2014, but concerns about the financial part of the proposed plan have arisen.

Todt explained: “It is true that the (2014) package will be more expensive, but it is also true that the FIA has been in consultation with the engine suppliers in order to reduce the cost increase. For example we have already agreed to a reduction in the number of power units. From eight per driver per season in 2012, we will reduce this to five per driver in 2014 and to four per driver per season in 2015.”

Another cost-reduction plan is to allow engine manufacturers to supply to more teams. The current maximum is three teams, with the exception of special cases where the suppliers have permission from the FIA. For this plan, it is up to Todt to make a proposal to the World Motor Sport Council.
