Newly-promoted NASCAR chief operating officer Steve O’Donnell confirmed to members of the media on Thursday that officials are considering scheduling an exhibition series for electric cars.

The idea of an all-electric-series was first reported in 2021 but the organization was exploring the idea as a potential companion to the Cup series.

Manufacturers like Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota have all displayed interest in moving towards an electric future. O’Donnell said during a teleconfrence:

“We are exploring some opportunities around an exhibition series in that space. And as everyone knows, there’s a huge push across all of our (original equipment manufacturer) partners, and even potentially new OEM partners. So, it’s important for us to explore that space. I think there’s a lot of interest from our current partners to be a part of that.”

O’Donnell also noted that the organization has not fixed any time limit towards going fully electric. Further to all the possibilities of conducting all electric racing, O’Donnell said:

“We look at NASCAR as a place where, in an ideal world, we’ll be all things to everyone. So, if you go to a race weekend, you could see whatever type of technology you want throughout a race weekend.”

O’Donnell mentioned that fans are very open about the concept of newer technologies. He went on to say that there are other technologies like Hydrogen which are also being looked at by the sanctioning body as well.

He emphasized that the ultimate goal of featuring different technologies would be to provide entertaining races for fans.
