Tom Brady on how close he was to retiring with the Patriots for one particular reason

Wild Card Round - Tennessee Titans v New England Patriots
Buccaneers QB Tom Brady with the New England Patriots

Tom Brady is the most successful quarterback in NFL history, but that would've been different if he had retired after his fourth season in the league. In an advert for TB12 Sports, the three-time NFL MVP explained why he nearly retired from the NFL at the young age of 27. Brady said:

“When I was 27, I almost retired from the game of football, because of elbow pain. Now, I’m 45 years old and I’m still here.”

In that 2004 season, Tom Brady threw for 3,692 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions at the age of 27. The former University of Michigan signal-caller led the New England Patriots to their third Super Bowl in four seasons in that campaign.

The current Tampa Bay Buccaneers star credits his longevity in the league to the 'TB12 method.' It involves meticulous dieting and workouts that center on stretching and pliability. Thanks to his workouts, Brady has put together arguably the greatest resume of any player to ever step on an NFL field.

Following his efforts in the 2017 season, Brady became the oldest player in NFL history to win MVP at the age of 40. It was the third MVP award of his career. The three-time All-Pro has a total of seven Super Bowls and has won the Super Bowl MVP five times. His last came in Super Bowl 55 (February 2021) with the Buccaneers after they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tom Brady became the only player in league history to eclipse 100K passing yards (including playoffs) versus the Los Angeles Rams in Week 9 of this campaign. He also passed Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning for the most game-winning drives in NFL history in that game.

How long was Tom Brady retired?

Tom Brady retired from the NFL in February after the Buccaneers lost to the Rams in the NFC Divisional round of the playoffs. However, the retirement lasted all but 40 days as the quarterback returned for his 23rd season and third with the Buccaneers in March.

With Brady seemingly set to continue playing forever, who knows when he will call time on his career? Tampa Bay have been disappointing this season, but still top the NFC South with a 4-5 record. Their lead in the South is tenuous, as the Atlanta Falcons are 4-6, the New Orleans Saints are 3-6 and the Carolina Panthers are 3-7.

Brady and the Buccaneers travel to Munich in Week 10, where they will take on the Seattle Seahawks in Germany's first ever NFL match. This should be a tremendous spectacle for the nation's international fans.
