5 questions facing India in the Asia Cup final

MS Dhoni has used Yuvraj Singh quite effectively with the ball since his return

India have literally cruised their way into the final of the first ever T20 World Cup. On the road to the final, the Indian team annihilated the other 4 teams in the tournament, including their opponents in the final, Bangladesh. The hosts, on the other hand, have also made it to the summit clash with relative ease, with the loss to India in the opening encounter being their only setback. Things may be appearing to be perfect for Team India on the surface, considering their unbeaten run in the tournament. However, there are a few issues which they may need to address on the D-day. Here are 5 important questions facing the Indians in the Asia Cup final:

#5 Will MS Dhoni use his part-time spinners?

MS Dhoni has used Yuvraj Singh quite effectively with the ball since his return

Indian skipper MS Dhoni has never had any inhibitions about using part-time spinners throughout his successful captaincy career. However, it will be interesting to see whether Dhoni will stick to this strategy in a match as important as the Asia Cup final.

With Hardik Pandya completing his quota of 4 overs in almost every match, the seamers are almost sure to bowl 12 overs in the match. Adding Ashwin's 4 overs to this figure will take care of 16 overs in the Bangladesh innings.

If Dhoni wants to get an over in from Yuvraj Singh or Suresh Raina, he may have to cut down Jadeja's quota to 3 overs. Whether the part-timers will be used or not will also depend a lot on how the frontline bowlers perform on the night.

#4 Will Bhuvneshwar Kumar get another game?

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has impressed on his return to the side

Bhuvneshwar Kumar got an opportunity to play in the match against UAE with the team management deciding to rest veteran pacer Ashish Nehra before the final. Kumar made the most of it by returning figures of 2 for 8 from his 4 overs.

It was a special performance by the 26-year old swing bowler, irrespective of the opposition he was playing against. Bhuvneshwar did not concede a single run in his first 2 overs and also picked up a wicket. The most heartening bit was the fact that the medium pacer was swinging the ball both ways and foxing the batsmen.

Taking into account Bhuvneshwar Kumar's impressive performance, he may be in the frame for a spot in the team for the final match. However, it is unlikely that the management will tinker with the successful Nehra-Bumrah-Pandya seam-bowling combination.

#3 Who will partner Ravi Ashwin in the spin attack?

Jadeja is the clear favourite, but Harbhajan may get another chance

Ravichandran Ashwin will be leading the Indian spin-charge in the final of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh. But a vintage performance by Harbhajan Singh in the match against UAE may have posed a healthy question for the team management about who should be Ashwin's partner.

Ravindra Jadeja has been doing a decent job of supporting the Tamil Nadu offie in the tournament so far. He may have picked up just 2 wickets, but Jadeja has been slightly more economical compared to Ashwin.

Even though the left-arm spinner is almost certain to retain his place in the summit clash, there may be a very slim chance of Harbhajan sneaking in, based on his promising spell in the previous match.

#2 Shikhar Dhawan or Ajinkya Rahane?

Shikhar Dhawan has been in disastrous form in the tournament

One of the biggest concerns for the Indian team ahead of the Asia Cup final has been the indifferent form of opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan. The left-hander has clearly been found wanting in the 3 innings that he has played and averages only 9.50 in the tournament.

Ajinkya Rahane has played only one match in the Asia Cup so far, where he replaced Dhawan at the top of the order. Unfortunately, he fell prey to a fired-up spell by Mohammad Amir and was dismissed for a golden duck.

Come the final against Bangladesh, India's team management will be in a quandary about who among the two will be a better choice. It is highly likely that they would stick with Dhawan, yet they may want to send him a message by dropping him in the final and opting for Rahane.

#1 Should Yuvraj Singh replace Suresh Raina at No. 4?

Yuvraj Singh has made the most of his time on the crease

Yuvraj Singh has shown quite a few glimpses of his old self during the ongoing Asia Cup. Although he has not scored big runs, Yuvraj has been quite consistent and averages 44.50 in the tournament. Another key aspect of his batting has been the fact that he has spent a lot of time in the middle.

On the other hand, Suresh Raina has come up with a shoddy performance in the Asia Cup so far and has scored only 39 runs at an average of 13. Despite getting the opportunity to bat at No. 4, Raina has failed to capitalize on it and has been dismissed cheaply on most occasions.

Considering this situation, Yuvraj moving up the order to No. 4 at the expense of Raina in the final could be a possibility. The big-hitting southpaw had been tried at No. 3 in the inconsequential match against UAE and he scored an unbeaten 25 off 14 deliveries.
