A staggering 17.3 million viewers tuned in to watch the Andy Murray-Novak Djokovic Wimbledon final, making it the highest for a Wimbledon final in over two decades, reported BBC One.

It surpassed the 16.9 million viewers of last year’s Wimbledon final which also featured Andy Murray against Roger Federer.

The peak audience was at 17:30 BST, when Andy Murray moved closer to victory. The match at that point of time had a 79.6% share of audience. Murray’s home country Scotland had a 90% share of audience with a peak audience of 1.9 million.

On an average, 12.1 million people watched the entire match. In terms of number of viewers, the final match outscored the 13.1 million viewers of Britain’s Got Talent final, which previously was the most watched TV programme of the year. However, it failed to cross the 26.9 million viewers of the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony.
