Second seed Roger Federer made quick work of his French opponent Richard Gasquet in the quarter-finals of the US Open Tennis Championships at Flushing Meadows today. The Swiss Maestro beat Gasquet in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.
Federer, a former World No. 1, is widely regarded as one of the greatest exponents of the game, and is now the only player who has not dropped a set in the US Open so far.
He will meet his 5th seeded countryman Stan Wawrinka in the semi-finals. Wawrinka beat the big-serving Kevin Anderson in straight sets, beating him 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. South African Anderson had earlier been responsible for the biggest upset in the tournament so far, ousting World No. 3 Andy Murray from the tournament.
Women’s second seed Simona Halep also beat her competitor, former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, dropping a set on the way to victory. Halep took the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and will next meet Italy’s Flavia Pennetta in the semi-finals. Pennetta is also in the finals of the doubles event with compatriot Sara Errani.
Indian players are doing well at the tournament, as two of them are now in the finals of their respective events. The top-seeded doubles pair of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza have progressed to the finals of the US Open following a victory over the Italian pair of Sara Errani and Flavia Pennetta, who are seeded 11th at the tournament.
Former World No. 1 Hingis will also partner India’s Leander Paes in the finals of the US Open mixed doubles, after the pair’s defeat of Rohan Bopanna and Yung-jan Chang in the semis. The Indo-Swiss pair beat their competitors 6-5, 6-2 to take a quick victory.
Their competitors in the final will be the winner of the Casey Dellacqua – Yaroslava Shvedova (Kazakhistan) and Anna-Lena Groenefeld – Coco Vandeweghe match-up tomorrow.
Paes and Hingis will now meet the unseeded American pair of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey in the mixed doubles finals. The all-American doubles pair won the French Open earlier in the year.
If Paes and Hingis take the title, it will be their third Grand Slam of the year, as they have won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
