Alberto Del Rio benefited from Big Show's trouble over signing a new contract

Last week on Smackdown, ‘Mexican Aristocrat’ Alberto Del Rio claimed a surprise victory over the defending champion Big Show in a last man standing match to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. Initially, it was thought of as a way to compensate for the impending departure of Mexican superstar Rey Mysterio with another latino babyface. However, murkier details have now emerged.

The real reason behind the title changing hands was the fact that Big Show’s contract with the WWE was coming to an end. Sources say that WWE and Big Show could not come to terms on a new contract. With time running out, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon made the decision to strip the belt off the Big Show and crown Alberto Del Rio as the new Champion. It was also considered to be Big Show’s last match in the WWE. However, a deal was reached midway through last week and Big Show took part in all of this week’s WWE programming. It is believed that writers were pushed to a corner over the decision and were angry due to the delay in signing a new contract. Now that Del Rio has become the new champion, the writing team believes that he will be the focus of the show in the near future.

The fact that Alberto Del Rio’s face turn happened during this tumultuous period enabled him to be the right choice to swap the title from the Big Show.
