Turnovers in basketball are often counted as a wasted opportunity. The team which conceded the turnover is usually by accident, but can also be because of bad strategy or by giving away unnecessary fouls. Coaches are usually fuming if a turnover occurs, and it can sometimes just be down to the silliness of the players on the court.

Turnovers can also be generated by players from the opposition who force a steal. There are plenty of other ways as well in which a turnover can be caused such as a player stepping out of bounds, a shot-clock violation, three-seconds violation, a back-court violation, etc.

With the star player of the team usually handling the ball, it often comes down to their decision making downhill. That being said, we look at the five players with the most turnovers this season in the NBA.

#5 LeBron James - 4

Year 17, and LeBron James is still dominating the league. The forward is averaging 25.4 points, 10.7 assists and 7.8 rebounds while shooting over 49% from the field. He's been the primary ball-handler for the Los Angeles Lakers and is leading the way along with Anthony Davis for the franchise.

The entire team's offense is being run through LeBron James and that is one of the reasons why he concedes four turnovers per game. The sheer pace at which the Lakers run their offense is also one of the reasons why LeBron has so many turnovers in a game.

King James has featured in almost all the games for the LA-based side as they are on top of the Western Conference with a 5.5 games buffer over cross-town rivals the Los Angeles Clippers and will be hopeful of delivering a championship this season.

#4 Luka Doncic - 4.3

One of the contenders for the MVP, Luka Doncic has been spectacular this campaign. After winning the Rookie of the Year Award last season, Doncic has stepped up his level and is now a contender for the MVP this term. He is averaging 28.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 9.3 rebounds while shooting over 46% from the field.

The guard runs the offense for the Dallas Mavericks and is the one who sets up teammates while holding the team together and is one of the reasons why he generates on an average 4.3 turnovers per game. His defense continues to be a liability but his offensive prowess has already seen him be regarded as one of the best players in the league.

Doncic has 13 triple-doubles this season which is the joint-highest in the league.

#3 Russell Westbrook - 4.4

Nearly playing like his old self, Russell Westbrook has stepped up big time for the Houston Rockets. Merited with an All-Star selection for the fine season he is having, the guard is leading the way for the Houston Rockets and was the star man during the recent slump suffered by James Harden.

The former MVP is averaging 27.5 points, 7.1 assists, and 7.9 rebounds this term while shooting over 47% from the field. Despite his jump shot still being unreliable, the ability of Westbrook to attack the rim at will is what bags him so many points. Sharing the burden along with Harden is one of the reasons why he has 4.4 turnovers in a game.

Arguably the most athletic point guard of all time, Westbrook continues to go past opposition players like they are cones and his dunks are truly a spectacle. With a great regular season, the guard will be hoping to deliver a championship to the city of Houston.

#2 James Harden - 4.4

In contention for the MVP title, James Harden is having a historical season in terms of his sheer offensive prowess. After having a supersonic start to the season, Harden has been in a slump for a while and is still averaging 34.9 points, 7.4 assists, and 6.3 rebounds this season by shooting nearly 44% from the field.

The guard is arguably the best scorer in the league right now and his defense seems to be improving every week. Under the Mike D'Antoni system, Harden's one-on-one ability stands out and is one of the reasons why he has 4.4 turnovers on average as he takes on players all the time and ends up losing possession some of the time.

After going small-ball, the Houston Rockets will rely on Westbrook and Harden's capabilities to ensure that they go deep into the postseason.

#1 Trae Young - 4.8

The leading man for the Atlanta Hawks, Trae Young has been on a roll this season. He is averaging 29.6 points, dishing out 9.3 assists while grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game this year and is shooting nearly 44% from the field.

Despite the poor year the Hawks are having, the guard is having his best season and that warranted him an All-Star selection this term. The range from which he drains three-pointers makes him a threat the second he crosses halfcourt and is one of the hardest players to guard in the league.

With the amount of workload assigned to him by the franchise, Young leads the league in most turnovers this season with an average of 4.8 per game. His no-look passes, fancy dribbling, and his ridiculous shots make him an entertainer but at the same time cause him to turn the ball over. He will be hoping to end the season well for the Hawks.
