After graduating from Legend High, he received close to no scholarship offers from reputed institutions until he caught the eye of Jeff Culver, an experienced head coach of the Johnson & Wales University in Denver. Once coach Culver was brought in as the Head Coach for the Division II UCCS, he offered White a spot in the main team. After three impressive seasons at the Division II stage, White opted to transfer to Division I Colorado and averaged 18.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.4 blocks on 50% shooting from mid-range. White was eventually selected 29th overall by the Celtics in the 2017 NBA Draft.
