Gary Trent Jr. is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA as of December 2024. Trent Jr. is the son of former NBA player Gary Trent and immediately liked basketball following his father’s footsteps. Trent Jr. first attended Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota, but transferred to Prolific Prep Academy in Napa, California for his senior season. He averaged 31.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while leading his team to a 29-3 record as a senior. He was a consensus five-star recruit and considered one of his class's best players. For college, Trent Jr. committed to Duke and seven other highly ranked recruits, four of whom were also consensus five-star recruits. Duke was among the highly hyped and watched teams in the 2018 college basketball season and Trent Jr. shined. Although he was not the leading scorer in his team, Trent Jr.’s sharpshooting ability gained a lot of attention and it was clear he would transition seamlessly into the NBA. Duke lost in the Elite Eight to Kansas after Trent declared for the NBA draft.

In the 2018 NBA draft, Trent Jr. was selected with the 37th overall pick in the second round by the Sacramento Kings. However, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers on draft night. He didn’t get much playing time in his first few seasons and spent a lot of time going back and forth between the main squad and the G League team. Trent Jr. learned from the then-Blazers superstar guard Damian Lillard and tried to mimic his game a lot. In the NBA bubble, Trent Jr. got his true break and became a regular starter for the Blazers and his shooting and defensive abilities made him one of the premier 3-and-D guards in the NBA. In the 2020 offseason, Trent Jr. was traded to the Raptors in a package to acquire Norman Powell. He is a starter on the team and has continued to put his shooting abilities on notice, having multiple games of over eight three-point field goals made. In August 2021, Trent Jr. signed a three-year $52 million deal with the Raptors to stay there. In July 2024, Gary Trent Jr. was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.
