Young started his basketball career at St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown before transferring to DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. Graduating in 2019 as a three-star recruit, he embarked on his collegiate basketball career with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As a freshman with the Charlotte 49ers, he earned impressive accolades, being named Third Team All-Conference USA (C-USA) and Freshman of the Year.
