Lauri Markkanen is a Finnish professional basketball player who plays as power forward for the Utah Jazz. Born in Finland on May 22, 1997, Markkanen played youth basketball in his home country before moving to the United States in 2012.

Markkanen played college basketball for one season at the University of Arizona, where he averaged 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He shot 42.3% from 3-point range for the Wildcats.

The Chicago Bulls selected Markkanen with the seventh overall pick in 2017. He joined a rebuilding Bulls team and immediately became a key part of their young core. In his rookie season, Markkanen averaged 15.2 points and 7.5 rebounds, while shooting 36.2% from 3-point range. With his exceptional performances in his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First-Team.

After four seasons in Chicago, Markkanen was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he played for one season. At the end of the 2021-22 season, Markkanen became a restricted free agent.

In July 2022, Markkanen signed a four-year, $67.5 million contract with the Utah Jazz and is now one of the leaders of a rebuilding team. Throughout the 2022/23 season, Markkanen averaged a career-high 25.6 points per game for the Jazz. He was also named an All-Star for the first time in 2023.
