Zach Edey began his high school basketball journey at Leaside High School, where he showcased flashes of a future star from 2016 to 2018. Following his time at Leaside, Edey continued his development at the prestigious IMG Academy from 2018 to 2020, where he developed his fundamental skills further and established himself as one of the promising prospects in the basketball world.

Before his high school at Toronto's Leaside High School, Edey started playing basketball with the Northern Kings Amateur Athletic Union program. Edey only decided to play basketball when baseball became unplayable due to his remarkable height and the impact his strike zone had on his ability to play.

In 2018, Edey relocated to the US and enrolled at Florida's IMG Academy in Bradenton. In his first year, he joined their second-tier squad and began working every day with Daniel Santiago, an IMG coach and former NBA player. The next year, Edey received a promotion to the school's national team. He reclassified to the 2020 class and had offers from schools like Baylor and Santa Clara before deciding to play collegiate basketball for Purdue. Zach Edey was a three-star high school recruit overall.
