The Cleveland Cavaliers introduced Moondog, in 2016. The inspiration behind the character was the city's rich rock 'n' roll heritage. Dedicated to the city’s famed RJ Allen Freed, he was dressed in rock-inspired attire, with sunglasses and a leather jacket. The attire had the Cavaliers' logo and the team then donned a logo featuring a snarling dog.

It was also a steady and deep research that resulted in a dog being chosen as a mascot. The research was conducted among the young fans of the team, who voted for a dog as a preferred mascot for the team.
