Indians bow out of World Boxing Championship

Indians’ run in World Boxing Championship came to an end yesterday as the last five participants, Shiva Thapa (56 Kg), Manoj Kumar (64 Kg), Vikash Malik (60Kg), Sumit Sangwan (81Kg), Satish Kumar (91Kg), bowed out of the quarter finals of their individual category events.

In the Bantam Weight 56 Kg category, fourth seeded Shiva Thapa lost 0-3 to Azerbaijan’s Javid Chalabiyey.

In Light Welter Weight 64 Kg category, Manoj Kumar lost to Cuba’s Olympic Bronze medalist, Yasnier Lopez.

RSPB unit’s Vikash Malik lost to Brazil’s Pan-American Games silver-medalist, Robson Conceicao in the Light weight 60 Kg category.

Sumit Sangwan failed to get past London Olympics silver-medalist and top seed Adilbek Niyazymbetov of Kazakhstan in the Light Heavyweighy 81 Kg category.

Unfortunately, Satish Kumar had to forfeit his match against Ivan Dychko as he was declared medically unfit by the doctors in the morning due to a cut on his right eye which he had suffered in Tuesday’s pre-quarterfinal bout.

Other Indian boxers were eliminated in the early stages, most notable being Beijing Olympics Silver medalist, Vijender Singh. He went down to reigning European champion and fifth seed Jason Quigley of Ireland.

Nanao Singh lost 0-3 to eighth seed Anthony Chacon Rivera of Puerto Rico while Manpreet Singh went down to top seed Teymur Mammadov by the same margin.

Mandeep Jangra lost his match after a tough second-round contest on Sunday. The 21-year-old, competing in his first world championships, put up a good show but unfortunately lost to Moldova’s Alexandros Riscan.
