Ryan Kalkbrenner is an American basketball player who starred at center for the Creighton Bluejays from 2020 to 2025. He earned national recognition, becoming a four-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year and winning both the Naismith and NABC Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2025.

Born in Florissant, Missouri, Kalkbrenner played high school basketball at Trinity Catholic, where he developed into a top college prospect. At Creighton, he steadily improved each season. His career-high came in November 2024, when he scored 49 points against UT Rio Grande Valley, setting a school record with 20 made field goals. In addition to his basketball accolades, he represented Team USA and won gold at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup.

Ryan Kalkbrenner’s hometown is Florissant, Missouri. He attended Trinity Catholic High School in his hometown. During his high school career, he was the most successful player in his junior and senior seasons. As a junior, he averaged 13.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks per game and was declared Player of the Year. He was also chosen as a member of the First Team All-Archdiocesan Athletic Association.

Kalkbrenner participated in the Amateur Athletic Union circuit for Mac Irvin Fire. His performance there made him the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. As a senior in the 2019-20 season, he averaged 16.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.7 blocks per game and led his team to a win-loss record of 22-6.

As a result, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch declared him a First Team All-Metro member. He was also a two-time member of the First Team Class 3 All-State Team. After his high school career, Ryan Kalkbrenner was regarded as a consensus four-star recruit and included in the top 100 prospects by 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN.
