Michigan Stadium introduces alcohol sales

Alcohol sales will now be permitted at Michigan Wolverines home games in 2024. The University of Michigan athletic department announced Thursday that the Michigan Stadium stadium will begin selling alcohol at football games starting this season.

Michigan began selling alcohol at other smaller venues for other sports, and after its success, the school decided to implement the change at football games.

“The University of Michigan Athletics Department will implement alcohol sales at Michigan Stadium beginning with the 2023 football season after carefully reviewing previous alcohol sale rollouts and fan experiences at Yost Ice Arena and Crisler Center,” a statement said.
"The Board of Regents voted May 16 to implement a Class C liquor license to the ‘Big House,’ starting Aug. 31 with a home football game against Fresno State.”

After a study of alcohol sales at sports venues, Michigan said that no serious issues had been caused by it.

"Part of the implementation process included the athletic department collaborating and regularly meeting with campus partners — including the Office of Student Life, Division of Public Safety and Security, Risk Management and Government Relations — to ensure a safe and responsible rollout of alcohol sales at Crisler and Yost, which began in February.
"There have been no reported behavioral issues related to drunken behavior or medical responses related to alcohol at either venue since the implementation."

Alcohol revenue will be used for operational expenses, and a portion will be directed to the university to help fund campus research projects, the school announced.

Michigan is looking to defend national championship

The Michigan Wolverines enter the 2024 college football season as the reigning national champions.

However, the Wolverines will have a much different roster as quarterback J.J. McCarthy and star running back Blake Corum are in the NFL. Coach Jim Harbaugh also left the school to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Wolverines will open their defense of their national championship on Aug. 31 against Fresno State.

Michigan will also have notable games against Texas, Washington, Ohio State, USC and Oregon, among others.
