He made his debut as a freshman for the Michigan Wolverines in the 2022 season. During his freshman season in 2022, Will Johnson made a significant mark on the field. He appeared in all 14 games, earning five starts as a defensive back. His performance didn't go unnoticed, as he was recognized as a Freshman All-American and shared the title of Defensive Freshman of the Year.

As a sophomore in 2023, Will Johnson had a standout performance against Minnesota, earning him the distinction of sharing Defensive Player of the Week honors. He was named to the preseason All-American team. His most remarkable achievement was winning the National Championship with the Michigan Wolverines in 2023, and he was named the Defensive MVP of the game.

As a junior in the 2024 season, he was named to the All-American second team and the All-Big Ten second team voted by media, honorable mention, and coaches. He was also a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award.
