Xavier Watts is a safety and played the 2024 season as a graduate student for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Watts began his collegiate career at Notre Dame during the 2020 season, where he played in only two games and was redshirted due to limited opportunities. In 2021, injuries within the linebacker position allowed Watts to switch positions from wide receiver to defense. He played primarily at the 'rover' position, a hybrid role between safety and linebacker. Over the season, he appeared in 11 games, accumulating 15 total tackles.

By the 2022 season, Watts had started four games and finished with 39 total tackles, including a career-high of nine tackles against USC. He notched four pass deflections throughout the season. The 2023 season proved to be a breakout year for Watts. He led the NCAA with seven interceptions. In addition to his interceptions, he recorded 47 total tackles, two forced fumbles, and a defensive touchdown. His standout season culminated in winning the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, awarded to the nation's top defensive player, in 2023. Watts received Unanimous All-American honors in 2023 and Consensus All-American honors in 2024.
