Complaint lodged against use of Indian tri-colour on helmets during World T20

Virat Kohli donned the tri-colour during his scintillating 82 off 51 balls against Australia yesterday

The Indian national cricket team could find themselves in spot of bother, over usage of the country’s tri-colour on their helmets. Filmmaker and social activist P Ullhas launched a complaint to the Mohali Police yesterday, alerting them about the issue.

He specifically cited the India-Australia game, and stated that ‘India’s flag wasn’t treated with due respect yesterday.’ He said on Twitter, “It is illegal to paste tricolour on helmets. Our national pride is disrespected by that, it is shameful to note that the players are seen spitting on the ground where they also put their helmet (when not in use).”

Captain MS Dhoni himself has stopped using the tri-colour, however, several other members including Virat Kohli still use the flag. Ullhas first registered the complaint to the Home Ministry, before being directed to the closest police station.

This is not the first time Ullhas has been in the news for cricket-related matters. Earlier this month, he had registered a complaint against Amitabh Bachchan for wrongly pronouncing words from India’s national anthem, during the India-Pakistan match.

Ullhas added, “After registering the complaint, the Ministry themselves admitted to the misdemeanour and asked me to lodge a new complaint to the Mohali Police.”

However, sources close to Mohali Police have stated they have not received any instruction to act on this matter. Our source added, “We have not been instructed by anyone in the hierarchy to look into this matter. The moment they tell us that it’s not justified, we will definitely act on it. But as of now, we have received no formal complaint.”

He added, “Right now we are just concentrating on providing security for team members and the public, that is our primary concern. But, again if something substantial comes up, we will definitely look into it.”
