Modern football, with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, has witnessed several records being broken and a good number of them being created.

We live in an era where two players who have won the Ballon d'Or a staggering five times exist, and that's saying some thing.

Goal-scoring records across Europe's top five leagues have seen a massive reshuffling over the years and is set to undergo more as the games continue.

The number of immense goalscorers at present is incredible and they are continuing their exploits for their respective nations as we speak.

Here, we take a look at the top ten goal-scorers of 2018 so far based on statistics from Goal:

#10 Jhon Cifuente (34 goals in 37 games)

Jhon Jairo Cifuente Vergara more popularly known as Jhon Cifuente begins our top ten list of goal-scorers so far.

Cifuente is not as talked about as the others on the list mainly because of the league he plays in.

The South American striker currently plays for Ecuadorian side CD Universidad Catolica and has been incredibly impressive, scoring 34 goals in 37 league games for the side so far.

#9 Antoine Griezmann (35 goals in 62 games)

World Cup winner and Atletico Madrid star Antoine Greizmann is the ninth-highest goal-scorer in 2018 so far, netting 35 goals in 62 games so far this year.

Since coming through the ranks at Real Sociedad, the Frenchman grew to be one of the most prolific goalscorers during his time at Los Rojiblancos.

After his move to Atletico Madrid in 2014, the 27-year-old rose above the ranks not only for the La Liga club but also for his national team.

Griezmann also played a pivotal role in the French squad that won the FIFA World Cup in Russia over the summer.

#8 Mohamed Salah (35 goals in 45 games)

Liverpool and Egyptian ace Mohamed Salah rose to super-stardom when he joined Merseyside club Liverpool in a £34m transfer at the beginning of last season.

Since then, Salah has won the Premier League Golden Boot for his goal-scoring exploits in his debut season where he scored 32 goals in just 36 appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side.

The Egyptian was also named the PFA Player of the Year for the 2017-18 season and was also nominated for the FIFA Men's Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or award this year.

This season, Salah encountered a mini goal drought which resulted in critics calling him a one-season wonder. However, the talisman quickly proved himself to be more than that, banging in goals for the Reds in no time.

The Egyptian boasts of 35 goals in 45 games so far in 2018, making him the current eighth-highest top-scorer this year.

#7 Luis Suarez (36 goals from 55 games)

Luis Suarez has proven that age is merely a number by silencing his critics with thunderous performances for Barcelona so far.

At one point this season, the Uruguayan also surpassed teammate Lionel Messi as the leading goalscorer of the Catalan giants.

The 31-year-old displayed fantastic leadership abilities in the absence of captain Messi in a few games last month.

The former Liverpool star's goal-scoring exploits this term makes him the seventh-highest goal-scorer so far in 2018, boasting of 36 goals from 55 games.

#6 Dave Turpel (37 goals in 44 games)

Dave Turpel is yet another player who is not as well known as the other stars on the list.

The Luxembourg international plays for F91 Dudelange, a team that is currently attempting to get into the Europa league.

The forward has been incredibly impressive, scoring 37 goals in 44 games for his side so far this year.

This makes him the sixth-highest goal-scorer in 2018 so far, beating the likes of Luis Suarez and Antoine Greizmann.

#5 Robert Lewandowski (39 goals in 48 games)

Our top five starts with Polish striker Robert Lewandowski who has enjoyed immense success with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old bagged the Bundesliga's Golden Boot last season after netting 29 goals in just 30 appearances in the league.

Despite being out of form earlier this season, the Bayern forward still manages to keep the club afloat, recently scoring in his side's 3-2 Der Klassiker defeat to rivals Borussia Dortmund.

The former Dortmund striker looks to be back on track, insisting that Bayern must try everything to close their gap over their rivals.

In spite of the polarizing start, the Polish star has 39 goals in 48 games under his belt so far this year.

#4 Diogo (43 goals in 51 games)

Former Olympiacos man Diogo Luís Santo is paying close attention to his idol Cristiano Ronaldo as the Brazilian beat the likes of Lewandowski and Suarez to secure the fourth spot in our list of top scorers in 2018 so far.

His career saw heightened interest from Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool and Middlesbrough.

After a torrid second season at Olympiacos however, Diogo returned to Brazil in 2010 where he joined Santos FC after his loan spell at Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.

In 2013, the Brazilian moved back to his boyhood club Portuguesa. He is currently playing for Thai Premier League side Buriram United, where he scored 45 goals in 51 games in his debut season.

Diogo boasts of 43 goals in 51 games so far this year, putting him right up in our top five.

#3 Cristiano Ronaldo (43 goals in 44 games)

We begin our top three with Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been impressive for the Old Lady so far this season, helping them to their best ever Serie A start.

As is widely known, the Portuguese ace moved away from Real Madrid in a surprising €100 million transfer to Serie A side Juventus over the summer.

This year, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner helped the Los Blancos side to their third consecutive Champions League title, scoring 15 times in 13 appearances in the competition, before breaking records at Turin months into his new role at the club.

Despite not featuring for Portugal in the UEFA Nations League, Ronaldo still remains the country's all-time top scorer, with 85 goals to his name in 154 appearances.

The talisman boasts of a staggering 43 goals in 44 games in 2018 so far and the numbers are only set to go higher.

#2 Lionel Messi (44 goals in 47 games)

Lionel Messi may have been bogged down by injury early this season, but the Argentine ace is one goal ahead of his Portuguese counterpart Ronaldo, having scored 44 goals in 47 appearances so far this year.

Messi also boasts of being the only player to have either created or scored 46% of Barcelona’s goals in La Liga in the past decade.

Despite Barcelona's mixed campaign last season, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner managed to score 34 goals to earn him a record fifth European Golden Shoe.

This season, Messi has been nothing short of impressive as he has netted nine goals and bagged five assists, while also having the most shots, completing the most dribbles and creating the most chances in La Liga.

Internationally, the 31-year-old has been on a hiatus after requesting a break from duty with his national team following Argentina's World Cup exit. The Argentine FA, however, insists that their talisman will make his return.

#1 Baghdad Bounedjah (47 goals in 34 games)

Beating the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi is Algeria international, Baghdad Bounedjah.

The 26-year-old forward plays for Qatar Stars League side Al Sadd SC and boasts of being the current top-scorer so far in 2018, netting an incredible 47 goals in 34 matches.

42 of Bounedjah's goals came in just 27 appearances for Al Sadd in the domestic league and the Asian Champions League while the other five came in international competitions for Algeria.

The forward has been phenomenal for Al Sadd since arriving in 2015, scoring a total 87 goals in 71 games so far for the side.

He also helped his national side secure their qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in their 4-1 victory over Togo on Sunday.
