AC Milan News: Flamini Eyes Long Stay, European Glory

AC Milan midfielder Mathieu Flamini is looking to extend his contract with the Italian club and is determined to win more trophies with the Rossoneri. He has only one year left on his current contract and wants to put pen to paper on a new deal as soon as possible.

Flamini spoke to La Corriere dello Sport about his wish to remain at Milan, and said-

“It is my intention to remain at this club and extend my agreement with Milan. There is no rush, though, we will speak in the future when the right time arrives.”

Flamini, a hard hitting and perennially energetic midfielder, joined the Italian giants from Arsenal in 2008 as a free agent. He looked a shadow of his former, more robust self in his first two seasons at the club however, as he barely made any appearances in the middle of the park and filled in at right back most of the time.

But the 2010-11 season saw him finally come out of his shell and find his long lost form. He made 22 appearances in Serie A and put in many imperious performances as Milan won the League title with room to spare. This was Milan’s first Serie A win since 2004; and Flamini too had finally got the silverware that he so craved for when he was at Arsenal.

He also featured heavily in his side’s Champions League run, which ultimately ended in defeat to newbies Tottenham Hotspur.

After donning a League winner’s medal this time round, Flamini is looking to go one step further and has his eyes set on a European medal with Milan next season. He said-

“After winning the league title this year, I now want to try to win the Champions League.”

All seems fine and rosy at the surface with Mathieu Flamini and Milan, but the club would do well to be a bit wary. Flamini has a history of two acrimonious exits behind him; both from Marseille and Arsenal. His departure from the London club left a particularly bitter taste in the mouth of Arsene Wenger and many fans, as he had given the manager his word that he would stay and later went back on it.

But Flamini has professed his love for Milan multiple times, and claims it to be his boyhood club. Milan will hope these words have a ring of truth to them, as they wouldn’t want to lose one of their most integral players just when they seem to be pushing on to bigger things again.
