Arsenal are in “advanced talks” with Real Madrid to sign German midfielder Mesut Ozil in a deal believed to worth around £40m.

The world record signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur could deem Ozil surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu. The 24-year-old was left on the bench for 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Ozil joined Madrid in a £12.4m deal from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in 2010. He has played 155 games for the nine-time European champions.

Arsenal are also interested in Ozil’s club teammates Angel di Maria and Karim Benzema. Manager Arsene Wenger has made only two signings in young striker Yaya Sanogo, 20, and returning midfielder Mathieu Flamini, 29, both on a free.

Ozil has also attracted interest from Premier League champions Manchester United and Ligue 1 champions PSG.
