Conquered Spain, Germany and Europe: Spurs linked with illustrious manager

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has emerged as a contender for theTottenham job, speaking of his ambitions to work in the Premier League.

Such a deal would be a complicated one, with Van Gaal unavailable until the summer. The 62-year-old is currently manager of the Dutch national side and swiftly ruled out the possibility of combining the two roles.

He is set to leave the job after the World Cup in Brazil, but it is unknown if Spurs would be interested in waiting until then.

On the same day as the Van Gaal links emerged, caretaker boss Tim Sherwood insisted that he is only interested in the job if given it for the long term.

“I’ll never comment on offers,” Van Gaal told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

“I’ve always said I want to work in the Premier League eventually, so there’s a chance. There are times a deal is announced and there are times it’s in preparation. At that time there’s no time for media. But everyone who knows me knows I won’t do a job share.”

Tim Sherwood managed to guide Spurs to a 3-2 victory in his first Premier League came as a manager.

Fresh from a win in his first match as a manager, Sherwood was clear in his desire for the job on a full time basis.

“I will have a chat with the chairman and see what’s best for the football club moving forward”, he said. “I need to know what they’re thinking. I don’t want this job for five minutes. That’s of no interest to me. So are we going to move it forward or not? I need to talk to the chairman and see what he’s got planned.”

“There are some great candidates out there for this job. It’s a massive club with history and tradition but whatever happens needs to be right for me, too. Whoever takes this job is in a good position. André has left the club in a good state; there’s nothing wrong with the job he’s done. Hopefully whoever is put in charge can take it on to the next step.”

Sherwood played down concerns over the role of director of football Franco Baldini, whose role in the club’s transfer policy has been heavily scrutinised since their summer spending binge.

“I don’t know any different, do I? He’s not going to interfere, anyway. And I can adapt to anything,” the former Spurs midfielder continued.

As it is, Baldini may have little to do in the short term anyway, with Sherwood labelling new signings as “the last thing we need.”
