Following AVB’s sacking barely 24 hours after a humiliating home defeat against Liverpool, Tottenham are on the lookout for another manager to take his place. Whilst the Portuguese manager was without a doubt their best manager in the Premier League, having won over 53% of his games, his side’s start to the season was far from ideal. And although the team have the most clean sheets in the League, two huge defeats in the space of five matches were just too much for the Spurs board as they decided that it was time for a change.

With over £100 million spent over the summer, the Spurs faithful demanded some free flowing attacking football, true to their traditions. But, Spurs have hardly been prolific in the League and that certainly didn’t help matters. Whilst they were rock solid in the opening 11 games conceding just 6 goals, they ended up conceding 15 in their previous five matches and that couple with their goal-shy attack was enough for the board to say enough was enough.

With AVB out, Spurs will be looking at somebody to take the club to where they think it belongs and although Tim Sherwood, the club’s Technical co-ordinator is set to take charge in the game against West Ham in the Capital One Cup, they will be looking for a full-time manager to take them through the rest of the season. Whilst the list of potential candidates is long, those available right away isn’t. So, let us look at who they can snap up before it’s too late.

Fabio Capello

2014 FIFA World Cup Final Draw

The Italian, who is currently the manager of Russia is the man who is tipped by most bookies as one of the favorites to land the Spurs job. Whilst it is true that Capello is busy preparing his Russian side for battle in the World Cup next summer, he might well be open to managing until the end of the season.

Aside from that, he is also someone who has plenty of previous experience working alongside technical director Franco Baldini, having working with him during his spells at Roma, Real Madrid and England. All of which mean that the board will be more inclined to give him the hot seat given his familiarity with the technical director.

Odds: 6/4

Michael Laudrup

Norwich City v Swansea City - Premier League

Ever since taking over at Swansea City, Laudrup has made people sit up and take notice of him and his side. He made an already impressive side even better when he won the League Cup with the club and whilst he still maintains that he is happy at Swansea and will stay until the end of the season, he wouldn’t want to miss out on such a high-profile opening if it comes his way.

And Spurs will be hoping that is the case as they seek to remedy a situation that is as close to beyond repair as it can be. Unlike the others on this list, Laudrup is a viable long-term option, if they can get him from Swansea this season.

Odds: 5/1

Glenn Hoddle

BMW PGA Championship - Previews

Another manager, whose name has been mentioned is Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle, who was a prolific player and also managed the club between 2001 and 2003. Ever since his departure from Wolves in 2006, the Englishman has been without a job and this might be the perfect time for him to make a comeback.

Another former legend, Lineker now feels that the time is ripe for Hoddle to make his comeback into management, as he, in Lineker’s words “has a brilliant football mind”. If there is one thing that Hoddle has going for him, is his relationship with the fans and the fact that he is available as soon as they want him.

Odds: 10/1

Mauricio Pochettino

Newcastle United v Southampton - Premier League

Just like Laudrup, another young Premier League manager who has been making plenty of friends ever since his arrival from La Liga has been Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino. Ever since coming to England from Espanyol, the Argentine’s stock has been on the rise thanks to his stellar Saints side who started the season very well.

Whilst it is tough to see him jumping ship in the middle of the season, he is said to be keen on a move to a “bigger” club and they don’t really come much bigger than Tottenham and therein lies the club’s chance to snap up the Argentine. Whilst it is true that he doesn’t speak English with any control, he certainly has what it takes to mastermind a comeback and turn Spurs’ season round.

Odds: 12/1

Guus Hiddink

FC Dinamo Moscow v FC Anzhi Makhachkala - Russian Premier League

One of the frontrunners in the race to succeed AVB as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, it looks as though, the 67-year-old Dutchman is unlikely to join the North London club anytime in the near future. Hiddink’s agent, Cees van Nieuwenhuizen, has declared that his client already has a job lined up and said “I would be surprised if [Hiddink] went to Spurs”. He went on to say that his client has just got the Netherlands job after the 2014 World Cup.

Whilst it is true that he has just signed a contract with Holland after the World Cup, the Dutch manager is still available until the end of the season and might just be the perfect fix until the end of the season. That will give Spurs plenty of time, to line up a quality replacement for the recently departed Portuguese manager.
