2015 National Games: Day five medal round-up

Day five of the 2015 National Games saw Services extend their lead at the top of the medals tally with 29 gold medals, four ahead of second placed Haryana.

Sajan Prakash is turning out to be the Michael Phelps of the event, he extended his lead in the overall tally by clinching his fifth gold medal and seventh in total.

In other events, Haryana secured gold in the Netball event to edge close to the top spot.

Maharashtra managed to secure medals both in the shooting range and the swimming pool today.

So here’s a look back at the major events that took place on February 5 at the National Games.

Swimming

Sajan Prakash set a games record 8:15:49 to win the 800m Freestyle event for Kerala. Maharashtra’s Saurabh Sangvekar finished second as Anand A.S made it a double delight for Kerala securing the bronze.

Manna Patel of Gujarat also set a meet record in the Women’s 100m backstroke with a timing of 1:05:32. Maharashtra’s Jyotsna Pansare took the silver medal and Vaaniya Kapoor from Karnataka took bronze.

The Men’s 100m backstroke saw Madhu P.S from the Services clinch gold, followed by Arvind M from Karnataka and Aaron D’Souza secured bronze.

Shooting

The shooting ranges saw Services secure the team gold with 1724 points, ahead of Punjab with 1712 points and Uttar Pradesh took bronze with 1711 points.

Elezebath Koshy from Kerala shot a 445.9 to win gold in the 50m Rifle 3 position. Vedangi Virag from Maharashtra won silver, followed by Sandhya W from Tamil Nadu.

The 25m pistol for women saw Sarnobat Rahi from Maharashtra win gold. Madhya Pradesh’s Pathak Surbi won silver as Gawande Shrey from Maharashtra made it double delight for the state securing the bronze medal.

Gymnastics

Prabjod Bawa from Punjab won Individual all round gold with a score of 41.3, followed by Palak Kour from Jammu & Kashmir won silver with a score of 39.20 and G Megna secured bronze (39.10).

Kho Kho

Not the most popular sport, but kho kho saw Maharashtra secure yet another gold medal by defeating Kerala in the finals.

Netball

Haryana clinched gold in the controversial Netball event, which saw Chandigarh disqualified for forgery. Punjab won silver and Kerala secured the bronze.
