That was a classic tennis rally and a half. Zverev is matching Federer on athleticism here and then some, and playing some vintage Federer-type shots in the process. Tennis fans win.

Couple of passing shots from both players and they're locked in a good rally. There's a forehand lob from Zverev that goes past Federer, but the Swiss is in no mood to let breaks march up on him. He breaks back.

Australian Open 2017 : Stan Wawrinka tames Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to make semi-finals

Stan Wawrinka to Jim Courier: "Yeah I'm glad to see you, when I see you I win a match."

He also is the 12th active player to chalk up 250 ATP hard-court wins.

Wawrinka will either play close friend Roger Federer or Germany's Mischa Zverev in the semi-finals.

Tsonga did much to mount a bit of a fight in the second set, but looked low on motivation today, and it appears that altercation didn't help much.

This is Wawrinka's third straight Grand Slam semi-final. He looked by far the more consistent player today, and did well to hold his nerve.

Game, set, match Stan Wawrinka, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3.

And it's done.

Tsonga sends it long. 40-0 Stan Wawrinka.

Match point.

And he holds on as a challenge by Wawrinka is unfruitful. But now Wawrinka is serving for the match - and there's that temple-point!

A great backhand winner from Tsonga and he's still surviving here. But crucial errors are costing him here and Wawrinka's placement and that single-handed backhand are both in great form.

A drop volley from Stan Wawrinka followed up with an unforced error from Tsonga - and that was the Frenchman's last attempt to stay in this match, we think. Wawrinka is now firmly in control of this.

Finally, Tsonga has raced to a break! He's only won one of his 5 break point chances though, while the Swiss has won all 3 of his.
