DeForest Buckner plays as a defensive tackle for the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL. Born on March 17, 1994, to an African-American father and a Samoan mother, Buckner went to the Punahou School in Hawaii. The four-star recruit was also a basketball player and won the 2012 Gatorade Player of the Year award in basketball as well. Following his stellar athletic resume, he enrolled at the University of Oregon and had several All-American selections. Graduating in 2015, he was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and the recipient of the 2015 Morris Trophy, among other honours.

The San Francisco 49ers chose Buckner as the 7th pick in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Further, he was selected to the second team All-Pro and made a Pro Bowl with the 49ers. Buckner was traded by the 49ers to the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, in return for their first-round NFL draft selection. After his trade, he agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $84 million, which made him the second-highest-paid defensive tackle, according to Spotrac. The contract was further extended for two years in April 2024, worth $46 million.
