Connecticut-born linebacker Dwight Freeney was drafted in the first round (11th pick) of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played for the Indiana Colts for a decade before going to the San Diego Chargers in 2013. He won the Super Bowl XLI in 2006 where he started all 16 games. Freeney was also presented with the Indiana Colts ring of honour and was a part of the NFL 2000s decade. After leaving the Colts, Freeney played for 5 different franchises in six years before retiring in 2017. Freeney appeared in 218 games recording 350 combined and 299 solo tackles in his career.

Freeney committed to Syracuse University and was a starter for two years. He earned a spot in the All-Big East Conference team for consecutive years in 2000 & 2001. At the end of his college career, Freeney recorded 34 quarterback sacks & 51 tackles for a loss. Freeney became the tenth player from Syracuse to be chosen for the College Football Hall of Fame when he was inducted into the class of 2023.
