Matt LaFleur is the current head coach of the Green Bay Packers. He was signed by the franchise in the 2019 NFL season and has had relatively good success for the first five years as a head coach in the northern state of Wisconsin. After a down year in 2022 where the team finished with a 8-9 losing record, LaFleur led the Packers to a divisional round in 2024 with first-year starter in Jordan Love.

Leading the team into the postseason on the back of thirteen wins in each of his first three years at the job, it is the playoffs where he has stumbled. The Packers reached the NFC Championship Game in 2019 and 2020 but lost to the San Francisco 49ers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers respectively. In 2021 they once again bowed out to the 49ers but this time in the Divisional Round. They won Wild Card round against the Dallas Cowboys in 2023 playoffs but came short against 49ers once again in Divisional Round.

LaFleur has a rich history with the game of gridiron football having played the same in his school and college career. Starting out as a wide receiver, he then switched over to the quarterback position but ultimately did not reach the NFL as a player. Immediately after graduating in 2002, LaFleur started his coaching career in 2003 as a graduate assistant at the same college he attended - Saginaw Valley State.

Has Matt LaFleur won a Super Bowl?

Working his way from one college to another college team and in various coaching roles such as offensive assistant, quarterbacks coach, wide receivers coach, and more, LaFleur was hired by the Atlanta Falcons in 2015 as the quarterbacks coach. The following season the Falcons made it to Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots.

In the capacity of a quarterbacks coach, Matt LaFleur worked with all the quarterbacks in Atlanta for two seasons which included the starter Matt Ryan. In 2016, Ryan had his career best year as not only did he lead the Falcons to the Super Bowl, but he also won his first and only NFL MVP award till date.

With an 11-5 record on the season, the Falcons finished as the top seed in the NFC South and marched into the playoffs taking care of the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers before the title clash.

In the all important final game of the season, the Falcons came out strong and quickly established a huge lead and went into the half with a commanding 21-3 lead. Although the Falcons should have easily won the game after extending their lead to 28-3 midway through the third quarter. However, the Patriots staged a comeback and scored 31 unanswered points as they won 34-28 in overtime. Ryan for his part completed 17 of 23 passes for 282 yards which included 2 passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. He had a 144.1 passer rating. Unfortunately, this meant that LaFleur missed out on a Super Bowl ring and has not been back to the title game ever since.

Matt LaFleur as Packers Head Coach

After helping Mat Ryan and the Falcons have an extraordinary season in 2016, LaFleur took up one year offensive coordinator roles with the Los Angeles Rams and then the Tennessee Titans in 2017 and 2018 before landing his first head coaching job with the Packers.

His first three years were extremely fruitful at Lambeau field, especially considering the Packers topped the NFC North each year. With 13 wins each year there were a lot of expectations on the team as well as their starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, things didn’t click in the postseason and their 2022 season was a huge step backwards. But LaFleur worked his magic once again with first-year starter Jordan Love as the Packers went all the way to Divisonal Round after departing with Hall of Fame quarterback in Aaron Rodgers in 2023 offseason.

The Packers are now looking to built on the 2023 success in 2024 with Jordan Love now established as the longtime face under center for Green and Gold. However, Detroit Lions steady emergence and Chicago Bears reformed look with Caleb Williams under center will make it hard for LaFleur and the Packers to win the NFC North like old times.
