Based in the Greater Miami area, the Miami Dolphins are one of the oldest professional American football teams in the National Football League. It participates in the AFC East division. Their home games are held at Hard Rock Stadium, which is situated in Miami Gardens, a northern suburb of Miami, Florida.

Over five decades ago, the Dolphins were founded by Joe Robbie and Danny Thomas in 1965. The Miami Dolphins have had three main owners since the franchise was established. Joe Robbie (1965–1995) was the founding owner and led the team to two consecutive Super Bowl wins in 1972 and 1973. After Robbie, Wayne Huizenga took ownership in 1995. Since 2009, the team has been owned by Stephen M. Ross.

The Miami Dolphins, also known by nicknames such as "The Phins," "Killer Bees," and the "No Name Defense," have a rich history in the NFL. The team has won two Super Bowl championships, in 1972 (Super Bowl VII) and 1973 (Super Bowl VIII). They have won five AFC Conference championships and secured 13 division championships in the AFC East.

Stephen M. Ross is the current owner of the Miami Dolphins franchise, taking over the ownership in 2009. Ross is also involved in real estate development and philanthropy. He is the chairman of Related Companies, a real estate firm, and holds a 95% ownership stake in the Miami Dolphins.

Ross was born and raised in Detroit and, as of July 2024, he is 84 years old. Growing up, he initially attended Mumford High School in Detroit and then transferred to Miami Beach Senior High School. Academically, he earned a BBA from the University of Michigan in 1962, followed by a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University in 1965, and a Master’s degree in Taxation from New York University in 1966.

He began his career as a tax attorney before founding Related Companies in 1972 as an affordable housing developer. Currently, he is the chairman of Related Companies and the owner of the Miami Dolphins. Additionally, he has stakes in Equinox Fitness, SoulCycle and numerous fast casual restaurant chains.

According to Forbes, as of July 2024, Ross has an estimated net worth of $10.1 billion. In 2020, he was ranked 185th on Forbes' Billionaires List, and he was also featured on the list in 2023.

Additionally, Ross has made huge donations to the University of Michigan and other charities. He has donated a total of $478 million to the university, making him the biggest donor in its history.
