Established in 1966, the Saints played their first season in 1967. After using Tulane Stadium as their home field during their first eight seasons, they have played their home games at Caesars Superdome since 1975. They are headquartered at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center in Metairie, Louisiana.

The Saints were founded by John W. Mecom Jr., with the help of David Dixon and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966. Mecom Jr. owned the team until 1985; after that, ownership transferred to Tom Benson. After Tom Benson passed away in 2018, his wife, Gayle Benson, became the principal owner of the franchise.

The Saints have achieved notable success in their history. They have won a Super Bowl title (Super Bowl XLIV) and 1 conference championship in the NFC, both in 2009. Additionally, they have secured 9 division championships.
