Any franchise in the National Football League (NFL) is a strong unit led by a head coach. The responsibility of a head coach is not just on the field but also behind the scenes and in the management of other staff involved with the team.


A good head coach can take a group of players and provide them with the direction and guidance to make it to the NFL Super Bowl. The NFL has seen a lot of legendary coaches who have shown the world that they have what it takes to build a franchise into a winning name. Active coaches like Bill Bellichick and Andy Reid have established themselves in a list of all-time greats for achieving a massive number of wins as coaches. Andy Reid even made history in December 2021 when he reached 100 wins with the Kansas City Chiefs to become the only coach to achieve 100 wins with two different teams.

NFL Coach with Most Wins (All-Time)



The legendary football player, the late Don Shula has done it all. He has achieved great heights both as a football player and also as a football coach. With an overall 347 wins in his NFL coaching career, Don Shula has led the list as the coach with the most wins for well over two decades.


Don Shula used to play as a defensive back for teams like the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts and Washington Redskins. He made the most impact in the game as a coach. He started his coaching career as a defensive backs coach for the University of Virginia in 1958. His first head coach stint was with the Baltimore Colts in 1963 and he coached the team till 1969, amassing 71 wins out of 98 games played. He led the Colts to an NFL Championship win in 1968. His most success as an NFL coach was with the Miami Dolphins between 1970 and 1995. He won two back-to-back Super Bowls (Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl VIII) and totalled 257 wins in 392 games. His coaching career ran for 33 seasons out of which he had a very successful 31 seasons.


Out of a total of 490 games, Don Shula won 347 as a coach. He holds the record for most wins as a coach in regular season games (328) and also the record for the ‘only undefeated season through regular season and playoffs.

New England Patriots head coach Bill Bellichick is the most successful NFL coach in the modern era. Currently, he has 290 wins out of a total of 433 regular season games. He has a total of 321 wins including his postseason games. He is the coach with the most Super Bowl wins with 6 of them to his name. Bellichick helped resurrect the New England Patriots as a coach with the special quarterback Tom Brady as his aide.


With 9 Super Bowl appearances, he also holds the record for most Super Bowl appearances as a coach. He also has the most playoff wins (31) in the history of the NFL as a coach. He is currently ranked third among the coaches with most NFL wins and can cross Don Shula’s record in a few seasons if he continues to lead the Patriots to their successful seasons.
