Before his coaching career in the National Football League began, he played quarterback for the Chicago Bruisers and the Pittsburgh Gladiators in the Arena Football League in 1987. He also played for the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League. He was also a member of the Chicago Bears. In 1988, he played as a starting quarterback for the Leicester Panthers and after that, he returned to the US to begin his coaching career.
