In Jarvis Landry, we have another one of those cases of rags to riches stories. Landry and his older brother Gerard were told by their mother that they had to work hard to realize their dreams. They were not going to get anything handed to them on a plate because they just couldn’t afford it. Jarvis’ father left the family when he was only a child and so all the responsibility fell on the shoulders of his mother.
Being in a difficult situation, there were several instances when the family didn’t know where their next meal would come from. There were several days when Jarvis and his mother barely got time to see each other as she worked two jobs to keep the family afloat. Today, it is safe to say that the former Saints’ wide receiver has come a long way from his humble beginnings.
Jarvis Landry’s early life
Jarvis Landry was born on November 28, 1992 in Metairie, Louisiana. Growing up in a very poor family without a father and with a mother working two jobs was an extremely tough situation. At this point of time, Jarvis looked up to his older brother Gerard who was very passionate about football.
The older Landry took up more responsibility for the house and put his football dreams to the side. He decided to help his brother become a better player while taking care of the family’s other requirements. The connection between the two brothers is very deep and it was Gerard who continuously pushed Jarvis to excel in the game and to keep practicing to the best of his ability.
Attending Lutcher High School in Lutcher, Louisiana, Jarvis was known to be a three sport athlete as he was on the football, basketball, and track teams. Performing at a high level in high school, Landry was rated as a five star recruit and was even ranked as high as the number four wide receiver in the nation.
Jarvis Landry at LSU
Staying closer to home, Landry then went to the Louisiana State University (LSU) where he was one of the better receivers for the Tiger’s football team. His freshman and sophomore years went by without him getting too much playing time. Although in his sophomore year he did get an improved amount of time, it was in his junior year of college when he exploded onto the scene. Working in tandem with Odell Beckham Jr., who was the other receiver, the duo completely took over games and each finished with over 1,000 receiving yards in 2013.
Jarvis Landry in the NFL
Ever since his high school days, Landry was always doing special things on the football field. With the amount of talent he possessed it was no surprise that he decided to forgo his senior year at LSU to enter the 2014 NFL draft. Drafted in the second round by the Miami Dolphins, Landry played with the franchise for four years moving on.
Before the start of the 2018 NFL season, the Dolphins put the franchise tag on Landry, but they also allowed him to look for other teams who were interested in signing him. Landry was as a result traded to the Cleveland Browns after signing the franchise tag. He would once again spend the next four years of his career in Cleveland, but his numbers dipped quite significantly.
In 2022, Landry then signed with the New Orleans Saints, his hometown team, but he received very less game time featuring in 9 games but starting only 3 of them. On top of that, he missed nearly five games due to an ankle injury which further derailed his progress. With the rapid decrease in his performance and with his one year Saints contract over, Landry is currently a free agent who is facing a tough road to get back in the league.
What number is Jarvis Landry
Landry started his NFL career with the Dolphins wearing the number 14 jersey and then switched to the number 80 while playing for the Browns. Now, as the NFL has afforded the flexibility for players to choose from more numbers, Landry switched to number 5 for the 2022 season while playing for the Saints. Previously, that number was occupied by Mark Ingram II, but Ingram II changed his number to 22 vacating the number 5 jersey.
