Top 10 hated Superstars in Professional Wrestling

WWE fans are well aware of the storylines that the company sparks up to make the wrestling lean towards the Entertainment side. When the creative adds in some glitter and icings all over the storylines, the base is always the battle between a good guy and a bad guy.And one integral part of being the bad guy is to get a lot of heat from the fans. Throughout the companys history there were a lot of heels who excelled in their trade and setting the bar high for anyone who followed. So here is a look at some of the professional wrestlers who were so good in playing a heel that they managed to get hated wherever they went.

#11 Honorable mentions:

CM Punk

Ric Flair

Triple H

#10 Team 3D

Arguably one of the most sort out tag teams in Professional Wrestling, Team 3D was so brilliant as heels that they even got into trouble in real life.

The epitome of them pushing the limits came at their stint in ECW where the duo would spend a healthy amount of time abusing the crowd to generate heat. They would go near the railings and personally abuse everyone who was sitting near in the seats near the ring.

And there were even nights were the fans would wait outside the Arena so that they could get their hands on the two after the show. They weren’t able to go such limits during their run in WWE or TNA, but Team 3D clearly were one of the most hated teams back in the ECW days.

#9 John Cena

John Cena has established himself as the most polarizing superstar in wrestling as the number of fans who love him and the ones who hate him balances.

The primary reason for fans hating Cena is the way the company pushes his character. The WWE is not willing to turn him heel and doesn’t like him losing that often. This made the WWE Universe split in the middle with one part saying that Cena deserves to be booked like that while the other accuse Cena’s stardom.

The best part about all this is that, Cena is not even playing a heel. If he manages to develop such hate while he is a face, then one can only imagine the chaos if he turns finally.

#8 Nikolai Volkoff

Volkoff was one of those superstars who managed to milk out the hate thanks to the patriotism that runs through the blood of Americans. A memorable trait of Volkoff was that he made the fans stand up as he sang the Russian national anthem.

It clearly didn’t sit well with the fans when a foreigner came to their land and did that. Along with that Volkoff had a great run with the Iron Sheik as a tag team which hated the United States.

WWE tried to reboot the gimmick a lot of times throughout their history but never managed to get the heat that Volkoff developed back in the 80s.

#7 Eric Bischoff

The former WCW president may not be an in ring performer, but he was someone that the fans loved to hate. The WWE fans were never fond of the captain of the other ship during the Monday Night wars. To make matter worse, Bischoff even gave out results of Raw in his show and took shots at WWE.

Once WCW sank, Vince McMahon decided to bring Bischoff into WWE which just left the fans stunned. No one expected Bischoff to have a run in WWE after what he did, but when he made it he turned out to be a great heel figure.

Bischoff had a memorable heel run as a General Manager of Raw and his time with the NWo was also an integral part of the fans hating him so much.

#6 Hulk Hogan

Hogan was the ultimate face back in the golden age of Wrestling. Vince McMahon built his entire WWE around Hogan as their face.

But when he came to WCW, Eric Bischoff had other plans. Bischoff decided to turn Hogan heel to ignite the NWo angle which proved to be one of the best decisions he made in his life. Fans that were only used to seeing Hogan as a baby face started hating him after he turned his back on them.

They were booing every word he uttered and Bischoff clearly knew what he was doing as the heel turn gave WCW an upper hand over WWE. Though Hogan maybe considered as a legend now, old fans will still remember how they hated him for marking an end to the Hulkamania fever.

#5 Roddy Piper

Before there was CM Punk, before there was Bray Wyatt, what WWE had on their mic was Roddy Piper who just loved to get booed. From his NWA days itself, Piper established himself as a top heel who went all the way to make his opponent look bad.

He did a controversial angle with the Guerreros where he abused the entire Mexican community to get some momentum. Along with that there was his feud with Hulk Hogan which took down the roof wherever they went.

His Piper’s pit also was initially just a segment to build up the hate for him. Roddy goes into the ranks as a legend in the business, but there won’t be many fans who loved him back in his glory days.

#4 Paul Heyman

Heyman without any doubt is the reason for many good things in professional wrestling, but that doesn’t hold back the fans from hating him to the core whenever he takes a microphone in his hand.

Throughout his time with WWE, Heyman has managed to get a lot of heat from the fans with his Heyman guys. The way in which he constantly got into the nerves of fans led WWE to let their most priced assets rest in his management.

The latest addition to his long running hate resume came at WrestleMania where Brock Lesnar ended Undertaker’s streak. Ever since that, Heyman has been rattling about his client and pushing the fans to their limits as their only wish is to shut him up.

#3 The Iron Sheik

Those who are familiar with Sheik’s shoot promos might know how straight the guy is when it comes to wrestling. Well he wasn’t any different in his wrestling days either.

Sheik first gained the crowd’s heat when he ended Bob Backlund’s six –year reign. He was shown as an Iranian by the company to eat up on the Iranian Hostage crisis that was relevant at that time.

Sheik then formed a tag team with another anti-American, Nikolai Volkoff before joining Sgt.Slaughter to spit on the patriotism once again.

Fans just wanted to rip through him every time he came through the curtains since they simply didn’t want to cheer for someone who represented the country with was in war with the United States.

#2 Sgt. Slaughter

Slaughter may be remembered as an American Hero, but he had a career where he turned on the same American fans to become the top heel of the company.

In 1990 when the Gulf War was in the horizon, Slaughter decided to team up with a couple of Iraqis and establish himself as an anti- American. The fans were so angry with the way he turned that he received dead threats.

WWE recognize this period as one of the infamous ones in their history. Along with that he was also voted as the most hated Wrestler by Pro Wrestling Illustrated.

#1 Vince McMahon

WWE fans see the Attitude Era as the best period to be a wrestling fan. Well it wouldn’t have been there without McMahon being there to embrace the hate.

McMahon’s heel run started when after the Montreal Screwjob where he legitimately screwed Bret Hart. He then rode on that heel momentum throughout the Attitude Era to stamp his place as one of the most hated characters in WWE.

He was hell bound in making the life of top baby faces hard and fans loved to see McMahon getting beaten up for that. He also revolutionized the heel authority figure and fans were able to connect with the boss getting beaten which made him a more successful heel who the fans hated.
