WWE News: Charlotte Flair on not being considered 'diva material' at one point, her in-ring 'heel' portrayal and more

Flair had a pretty successful run as Raw Women’s Champion recently

On the 28th November 2016 episode of Raw, Charlotte Flair’s run as the red brand’s Women’s Champion came to an end as she lost to long-time rival Sasha Banks in a ‘Falls Count Anywhere’ match. Recently, the 2nd generation WWE superstar spoke to The Orlando Sentinel about her early days in the business, her current run and much more.

Charlotte revealed that she had never dreamt of being a wrestler so she wasn’t too worried about the ‘face/heel’ routine in the early stages of her wrestling career. However, since she was unable to cope with the criticism of being the legendary Ric Flair’s daughter, she started to feel that being a ‘heel’ was easier for her.

The genetically superior athlete was quoted as saying:

“I didn’t even think about good guy, bad guy when I started. I was that unfamiliar with the business. I never wrestled, I’d never done the [independent circuit], never dreamed about it.

I just knew my dad was Ric Flair and I really loved watching him. At my size [5-foot-10], it was easier to be a heel.”

She further went on to talk about being a heel:

“What I learned was, ‘OK, people already think you’re that way, might as well go ahead and act that way.’ That way, being a heel became easier -- because it was very hard for me to deal with the criticism of being his daughter.

Once I realized I could own it, I was like, all right, guys…”

The former Raw Women’s Champion also opened up about how the people who had once written her off as not being ‘diva material’ are now appreciating her for being so successful:

“Before I debuted, there was a lot of media saying Charlotte wasn’t diva material, she had a different look. But the same people who now [praise me as] the 3-time women’s champion were the same people who said, ‘Does she have the diva look?’

So you can’t get caught up in people’s opinions. What is the diva look? You know? I’m 5-10 and I’m blonde! How much more diva… I took that [criticism] to heart,”

‘The Queen’ was asked about her friendship with SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch to which she responded that ‘The Lass Kicker’ was her best friend. Although she claimed it was tough to be separated because of the brand split, she was happy that Becky had become the champion.

Charlotte was quoted as saying:

“Becky is my best friend. We’re Thelma and Louise. Everything happens for a reason, and [the split of Smackdown and Raw rosters] was hard. But I look at her now and she’s the champ, the Queen B of Smackdown, and that’s exactly where she belongs.”

She was also questioned on what she felt about doing media interviews. To this, she replied:

“Because I’m a heel, it’s the only time people get to see who I really am. Before they meet me, they’re probably like, ‘She is a …witch!’ So it’s a good thing.”
