WWE Rumors: Plans for the Tag-Team titles, Big E to get singles push upon return?

New Day’s chances of retaining at SummerSlam looking slim

The New Day has been a revelation over the last year. The New Day is in the midst of the longest reign of any WWE Tag Team Champions in history, not counting the reign of Demolition Axe and Smash from the golden era. But for the first time during their title reign, The New Day’s chances of retaining the tag titles appear in peril. WWE teased a New Day break-up during their last feud with The Wyatt Family, and even though Bray and company were victorious at Battleground, the titles were not on the line and the draft ended any chances of continuing the rivalry.

Post the brand split, New Day were the forerunners of the tag team division on Raw that also boasts of Enzo & Cass and Gallows & Anderson in the ranks. Clearly, Raw got the better of SmackDown in the tag team division at least.

Last week on Raw, Big E and Kofi defeated The Club in a tag match on RAW, but afterwards, Gallows & Anderson took out Big E with two boots of doom and an uneasy spot near the ring post, with Big E’s groin hitting the post. As if it wasn’t clear before that, Gallows and Anderson cemented themselves as the number one contenders to The New Day’s championships.

Big E was missing from this week’s Raw as well and WWE confirmed online that Big E suffered a contusion to the affected area. Speculation is swirling that Big E may not even be able to compete in the championship match at SummerSlam, forcing Xavier and Kofi to fend for themselves and defend the titles. This would allow WWE to take the belts off The New Day, with a built-in break-up angle they can go back to anytime they wish. The New Day has arguably done everything they can in the tag team division, with The Club certainly earning the right to have a run with the titles.

It seems that WWE officials are interested in pushing Big E as a singles star once The New Day runs its course. If Xavier and Kofi drop the titles against The Club, Big E could grow resentful that he lost the belts without even competing. This angle could work with any one of The New Day members or a big solo outing for Big E pushing him to the top of the card.

Add in the possibility of another big money feud between Gallows & Anderson and Enzo & Big Cass later this year and it could further spell the end of The New Day’s championship reign. For the moment, don’t expect to see Big E next Monday on RAW, and chances are he’ll only be at ringside for their match at SummerSlam.
