MCC say 'Mankading' is not against Spirit of Cricket

Umpire Michael Gough ruling Jos Buttler ‘out’

While English players were clearly not happy over the controversial ‘Mankading’ incident involving Jos Buttler and Sachithra Senanayake in the final ODI match at Edgbaston, Marylebone Cricket Club have made an announcement that Sri Lanka played within the spirit of the game.

With several former England players crying foul over Sri Lanka’s decision to uphold the appeal against Buttler, the English media too criticized the Islanders for their act. However, the MCC clarified that it is completely fair and further stated that laws are clear against batsmen from backing up early.

Speaking in London, an MCC spokesman said: "It is an emotive issue, but Jos Buttler transgressed a law of cricket and the club would not say the run out was against the spirit of cricket.

"The bowler gave a very clear warning and as I understand it the issue was also raised during the previous game at Lord's. In this instance of 'Mankading', the Sri Lankans have not transgressed the laws and it is not against the spirit of cricket to uphold a law of cricket.

"The law is pretty clear - It is an unfair advantage to be out of the crease."
