Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six wickets in the IPL 2023 on Tuesday, May 9, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With their sixth win in 10 games, MI leapfrogged to third position in the points table.

After being asked to bat first, RCB managed to notch up 199/6 in 20 overs on the back of half-centuries from Glenn Maxwell (68) and Faf du Plessis (65). Jason Behrendorff was the pick of MI bowlers as he picked three wickets.

In reply, MI raced off to 51 in 4.4 overs as Ishan Kishan smashed RCB bowlers all over the park right from the outset. He looked in sublime form as he galloped to 42 runs in just 21 balls and set up a great platform for his side in the steep chase. Wanindu Hasaranga brought RCB back into the game by dismissing both Kishan and Rohit Sharma in the fifth over.

It proved to be a momentary halt for MI just before a massive storm in hindsight. Suryakumar Yadav (83 off 35 balls) played one of the most electrifying knocks of IPL 2023. Nehal Wadhera (52* off 34 balls) complemented him perfectly with an impressive knock as the duo put on a match-winning 140-run partnership.

Vijaykumar Vyshak delayed the inevitable for a couple of balls by dismissing Surya and Tim David in the 16th over. Nehal Wadhera finished the match in style with a six in the next over, putting RCB out of misery.

Reflecting on the victory at the post-match presentation, Suryakumar Yadav said:

"Loved it! Much needed win. It was very important from team's point of view to come and play the home game and win it. They came up with a plan here to bowl slow and make me hit to the bigger boundary and I spoke to Nehal and we thought let them come with that plan - we will hit the ball into the gaps and run hard to take the singles and doubles."

He added:

"Your practice has to be the same what you have to do in the matches. When I practice, I do a proper practice. I keep fielders, I come out of my comfort zone and put myself under pressure. I know my game, where my runs are and I don't do anything different."
