Shane Watson believes his opening days numbered after "really disappointing" Ashes series

England v Australia: 3rd Investec Ashes Test - Day Four

Shane Watson will now have to settle at No.4 spot

Australian opener Shane Watson has admitted to a “really disappointing” Ashes series so far and believes the position which he once made his own, might be snatched away from him.

The 32-year-old all-rounder who is known to be an aggressive opening batsmen, revealed that he might have to let go of the top spot and settle for a place in the side’s middle order following his poor form in the ongoing Ashes series so far.

“From my personal perspective, it’s been a really disappointing three Test matches so far,” Watson was quoted as saying by Zee News.

“To be able to get the starts and get things going and then not to be able to capitalise on that has been extremely annoying.

The right-hander who averages just a shade over 24 in the series and has not managed to score a half-century yet, appears set to make way for David Warner at the top and push down to No. 4 where he can look to contribute to the side as well as regain his form.

“I certainly do love opening the batting in all forms of the game. But even in the second innings (of the Old Trafford Test) I absolutely do understand the thought process behind it (the move down to number four).

Watson has fallen into a rut of getting out LBW and finds little breathing space with the pressure mounting on him (more insight into the Watson issue).

On the other hand, Warner who missed the first two Tests as a result of his suspension for exchanging blows with England‘s Joe Root in a Birmingham pub during the Champions Trophy earlier this year, amassed 41 runs in his second innings at the Manchester Test while opening for his side.

The fourth Test starts on Friday at Chester-le-Street, which will be hosting its first ever Ashes Test match, with the home side coming in to play 2-0 up.
