Sri Lanka vs Australia 2016: I kept backing my plans, says captain David Warner

Australian batsman David Warner played a flawless innings in the 5^th and last ODI against Sri Lanka to clinch the series 4-1 after a disappointing 0-3 loss in the Tests. Leading the ODI squad temporarily, the opener has enjoyed a 100% winning record winning each of the last 3 ODIs against the hosts. But the thing which was lacking was his from with the bat and luckily broke the jinx by scoring a century in the last match.

It was impressive how he used his star bowler Mitchell Starc during the game and extracted the most out of him. And Cricket Australia may take his leadership qualities more positively in the future days.

Warner reveals the reason for giving Travis Head the ball ahead of other bowlers in the last game. The intent of the Lankan batsmen along with their approach led him to take such a decision. As per the reports of cricket.com.au, Warner said, "But I find that a couple of their players like to come after the ball a little bit, and with the ball turning away you’re always in the game especially with the one going on (with the arm). And I felt that Trav (Head) bowled well last game and I thought I might as well bring him on and see if I could jag a wicket.

"And fortunately enough again, it happened. I’ve seen captains use it in the past. If a left-hander is facing they might throw the offie on to try and put two dot balls and try and bring that big shot, and I felt with them losing a couple of wickets it would be quite risky for them to either sweep or take the game on. So that’s probably the reason why I did it,” he added.

Soon after the 2^nd ODI which the ‘Baggy Greens’ lost by 88 runs, their captain Steve Smith announced that he is flying back to Australia to stay fit for the rest of the season ahead and will not be a part of the remaining ODIs against Sri Lanka. Warner was given the responsibility to lead the side and did exceptionally well. He admits that he always had faith in himself and always “backed” his plans.

"For me, it was a bit of a sigh of relief (that the series is over). I never doubt myself and I kept backing my plans and you do need a bit of luck in this game,” said the interim ODI captain.
