Video: England beat New Zealand by ten runs in Champions Trophy

Hosts England and New Zealand went head-to-head in an ICC Champions Trophy Group A match on Sunday, with the winner wrapping up a place in the semi-finals.

The match reduced to 24 overs apiece after a lengthy delay because of rain.

England were put into bat and lost an early wicket when Ian Bell out for 10, with Mitchell McClenaghan claiming the opener’s wicket.

Jonathan Trott came to the middle before rapidly departing for eight, leaving England on 25 for 2, but Joe Root kick-started the innings with some big hits.

Root was eventually removed for 38 and Alastair Cook would also have gone had Nathan McCullum not put down his third catch of the innings – a straightforward effort at point.

The England captain punished that drop, completing his half century, before being caught and bowled by McCullum for a 64, leaving his side on 141 for 4.

New Zealand skittled England’s tail and bowled the opposition for 169, three balls shorts of their allotted overs.

Brendon McCullum‘s side started brightly but fell apart in the 4th over.

James Anderson removed both opening batsmen in the space of three deliveries – Luke Ronchi out for two, Martin Guptill following him back to the changing room on nine.

Ross Taylor was trapped LBW and any hopes that captain McCullum could spark a revival were abruptly dashed when he drove Ravi Bopara to the boundary, where Joe Root took a tricky catch.

Corey Anderson kept the scoreboard ticking over with 30 off 24 balls – including a towering six off James Tredwell that landed in the River Taff.

While Kane Williamson kept hopes of a win alive by bringing up his half century, New Zealand needed 36 runs off their last three overs to win, but the run chase was effectively ended when Williamson drove Stuart Broad high into the air and Anderson took a difficult catch.

England eventually won by 10 runs.
