Christian Eriksen declined a move to English giants Manchester City as he felt he would not get enough playing time at the club. The Daily Star reports.

Ajax legend and ex-Barcelona boss Johan Cruyff 21-year-old has been compared to fellow Dane and Swansea boss legend Michael Laudrup who has gained legendary status by playing at clubs such as Ajax, Barcelona, Read Madrid and Juventus.

Eriksen has had trials with Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona but opted for a move to Dutch giants Ajax.

Tottenham snapped up the midfielder for £11.5 million this season. Eriksen said: “It took me a while to get here because I said ‘No’ a few times.

“Last summer, City really wanted to sign me but it didn’t feel right for me.

“I didn’t feel ready for a league like the Premier League. Now it looks like I moved at the right time.

“Also, maybe I wouldn’t have played at City – and I wouldn’t go to a club just to stay on the bench.

“A lot of players have moved from Ajax in the last year and that gave me responsibility and made me grow. It made me better. I never worried about a move not happening. It was exciting at Ajax but you have to wait for the right club to come along.

“I had read up on the history of Spurs and their legends and I have seen their games over the years. I know a bit about the club and I know they like a bit of creativity.”

The Danish international is already being hailed as the next John White, who ruled Tottenham’s midfield in the 1960′s and who’s career ended prematurely after his tragic death in 1964.

Eriksen has already settled in at Tottenham, gaining critical acclaim when he made his debut against Norwich City.

My first game was good,” he said. “It was good to have people standing up for me. Everyone’s been good to me and if you have good players around you it is easier.”

The Dane hopes to continue his great run of form when Spurs take on Cardiff today.

Eriksen looks up to Swansea boss Michael Laudrup who is touted as the best football product ever produced by Denmark alongside former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

“I was a big fan of Francesco Totti,” he said. “But later on, I looked up to Michael Laudrup, the Swansea coach. He was probably the one I loved most.

“I’m looking forward to playing Cardiff. I know Andrea Cornelius who is there, as I’ve played with him before.

“I’m still living in a hotel but when I find a home I’ll really settle.

“I’m here to try to win the title. The most important thing is to qualify for the Champions League next year. Once you’re in the top four you can start looking for first place.”
